Date of Hike: June 22nd & 23rd,

Trail Conditions: We got some showers on the way up Saturday afternoon but managed to get in the hut before the real rain came. Everything socked in so no views on the way up. Sunday to the top was more of the same, briefly saw the hut from a couple of hundred feet above it vertically or horizontally, 3 or 4/10ths of a miles away)

Special Equipment Required: warm enough & light enough rain to not need coats on the way up, started up after the AM rain subsided & back to the car before any more rain. Bugs were not too bad, one or two of the boys may have used bug spray.

Comments: Optional - First overnight at the hut since I helped lead a youth group up there in 1999 where we were joined by our Moderator Dave. It was nice finding the old log entry. First time the rest of the group had been above 5,000 feet & well above treeline. (Everyone else having been either on Pierce or Carter Dome & Hight) AM forecast as head by the hut croo was for possibly severe storms & hail & we had planned a trip as far as Liberty, which is why we parked at Basin. Everything was socked in the & wind was in the 20's, where my less experienced group thought it was in the 30's.

All I could think about was the scene in Jaws with Chief Brody & Mrs. Kintner so after we reached the Lafayette Summit around 9:30, we retreated for some hot cocoa and a very brisk dunking in the Pemi near the Basin. Besides we can do the loop as a day-hike in good weather & enjoy the views.
