Hey!

Yes, I am trying to stay close to home (and in contact) these days, but I don't really need an excuse to go hiking the North South Trail, Rhode Island's premier end-to-end hiking route.

I took my own advice, and rode my bicycle the 18 miles from car and NST take-out (on the New London Turnpike) to my NST put-in trailhead (at the Trestle Trail near Greene). On the way, my burly and cheap mountain bike and I climbed 5 worthy big hills (no kidding) in increasing humidity and heat. I definitely paid the price for breaking away from the peleton.

The trail was pretty fine, and my wildlife sightings included a red fox, great blue heron, several hawks, and three white tails. I walked right into the last two does as I came out of the woods for the final time. Since I was only 25 feet away, we all had that 'deer in headlights' look before the two of them bolted (I was too tired by then).

A good 18 mile walk in Rhode Island, leaving only 22+ miles to the ocean remaining on my trek from Pack Monadnock to the sea.

Anyone know where I can get a NST completion patch? Obviously that is why (in addition to the endorsement income) I do it.

My hike route was basically this map North to South. My bike trip was via Rts. 3, 102, 177, and a bit of the Trestle Trail.

Sounds like it was a great trip, Tramper Al! I just recently bought the guidebook for the North-South Trail and have it on my to-do list for when I can't make it up to the mountains. Keep the trip reports coming!
