So this thing likes to call almost every morning just before first light, sometimes I think it wakes me, then keeps me up a bit. I just got a look at it outside with a heaplamp, about the size of a robin or bluejay.

I got its call on a video here.

whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will :D

Dead on rhihn, thanks. Now that I think of it, it does sound like "whip-poor-will."

Now, are you allowed to take them out in the name of a good night's sleep? ;)

I've had one come every late spring/early summer since I've lived in my house (10 years now.) We all look forward to its arrival. They are elusive though - I've only seen it / them a few times. Oddly enough, the first appearance this year was during April school vacation - I recall being the only one home at that time - and it was warmer then it has been all month (of June.)

There's whipporwill at my parents' home in New Boston. Unfortunately for me, with hearing loss, all I hear is Whip....Will... It's the oven bird that drives me nuts! Pizza pizza pizza pizza (7 times, already) -- I know, most people say it is calling Teacher!

Black throated green warbler??? (aka trees trees burry trees)

I have these guys at higher elevations 3200' One might think that that is balckpoll territory.

We have one that I can't figure out near us - looks like a pretty nondescript wren or small sparrow, but couldn't get close. It's here year round. I call it the "Triple Cheeseburger Bird". It goes "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Chee" but sometimes only two cheeseburgers. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, my brother is about to get a gun to get rid of his May thru September all-night whippoorwill, but the only thing is, it always sits on his bedroom window. Collateral damage would not be worth it.

Check out the Carolina Wren. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Carolina_Wren/sounds. This recording is fast compared with the birds I have heard in southern New England.

(BTW I am waiting for some Saturdaynight Live Jokes)

(As transcribed in Friends -- The One Without a Name -- Yet)

[Scene: Gary and Phoebe's apartment, it's morning and they're both waking up in bed.]

Gary: I really like waking up with you.

Phoebe: I like waking up with you too. (Looks out the window) Oh! It's such a beautiful morning. (Some birds are singing outside the window) Oh, I can stay here all day.

Gary: That would be great!

Phoebe: We could have breakfast in bed...

Gary: Wait, just a second.

Phoebe: Okay. (He grabs his gun and shoots the bird.) Oh! Oh no.

(Right up to that moment Gary the cop has been the perfect boyfriend.) :D

I've got one - but no sound file for analysis...

How 'bout the bird that starts early in the morning (and early in the Spring) and says:

"Ger-ma-ny, Ger-ma-ny, Ger-ma-ny"

Thanks!

I don't know, the Carolina Wren song is way too fast for the triple cheeseburger bird, plus I've heard it in early winter here a lot which seems kind of far north for it. But I know what you are saying. I have a CD that I have to pull out, just need to listen when the kids are not around as I get no end of grief for being a "bird nerd" if they are.
