trails: east pasture ski trail, bushwack, logging roads, bald land trail
conditions: pretty dry trail up to the 2700 ft. peak (52 with a view) on black mountain. some patchy snow on the final climb. from there we bushwacked up the ridge, over a number of bumps, to the northern summit the high point of which is a large rock that is hard to miss. woods were a mix ranging from wide open glades to scrappy sections of spruce and blowdown and were mostly snow free. we then descended towards the east branch through open woods picking up logging roads that eventually led us back out to the bald land trail and back to the trailhead. the roads ranged from wide open to heavily overgrown with some mud in spots and had bridges over the significant water crossings.
equipment: we left the snowshoes behind for this one and were glad we did.
comments: a beautiful day on what proved to be a very interesting mountain. some great views to be had from the summit with a little work poking around. as always the open glades were a treat. thanks to jeremy for a nice hike.
