black crescent, north black crescent, south black crescent 1/30/14
date: 1/30/14
trails: logging roads, bushwhack
conditions: we parked at the end of jimtown road in gorham in a large plowed out area. from parking we walked a short distance back down the road to a gated logging road leaving north. a couple inches of new snow on the road with an old snowhshoe trough visible. we turned right at the first intersection, passed another gate then a log landing and continued on the road until around 1800-1900 where we headed up an old skid road into cuts on the side of black crescent. a foot or more of snow off trail and some scrappy going in the cuts led to a plateau below the main ridge and from there we took a direct line up to the summit of black crescent through occasionally scrappy woods. good going along the ridge to north black crescent with open woods and a bit of blowdown. heading south from the main peak we first crossed a large mildly graded section of woods then drop more steeply in moderate woods to the beautiful open col with a false bump south of the main peak. we opted to go over this bump then continued in nice open hobblebush woods to the base of south black crescent where we encountered some cliffs. we wrapped around west and found a nice open line up to just below the summit. descending we doubled back off south peak then headed northeast through amazing open woods to a drainage heading east from the col below the main peak where we soon found on old logging road that took us back down the main road we started on. couple frozen brook crossings on the logging roads were not an issue.
equipment: snowshoes.
comments: a beautiful day to hike these peaks. loads of nice woods and good views from the logging roads and a couple points along the ridge. some moose sign, but not as much as i would have expected. was psyched to finally see myself included in one of the many defamatory entries to be found in the trailless summit registers here in nh. way to keep it classy nebw crew. so much great "history" being documented in those registers over the last few years.....thanks to amy for a great hike.
