Trail conditions: Chippewa Trail had just a dusting of powder over a sheet of mostly solid ice. We couldn't figure out where the trail went after hitting the beaver pond -- we crossed on the dam and found the yellow blazes on the other side. Otherwise the trail was in good shape and easy to follow.
Special equipment: I barebooted up and back without much trouble. HikerBob & Kaboose used snowshoes... more for the traction than anything else. I think stabilicers or microspikes would have been the best footwear for the current trail conditions.
Other notes: Lots of ledges on Black Mtn -- it would have had great views if the weather was a little better. Tougher than I expected (steep!) for a short little hike. Pictures here if you're interested. We had intended to descend via the Black Mtn Trail but we weren't sure whether roadside parking on Howes Hill Road was okay (since the summer parking area was not plowed.)
The team: HikerBob, Kaboose and me.
