Date of Hike: 1/18/2012 - 1/19/2012
Short version: It's finally winter in the Catskills. Prepare accordingly. It's snowing as I write this near Belleayre, so this report is already out-of-date.
Long version:
Windham High Peak from Peck Road via Escarpment Trail
Black Dome & Thomas Cole from Big Hollow Road via Black Dome Range Trail
Indian Head & Twin from Prediger Road via Jimmy Dolan Notch Trail & Devil's Path
Trail Conditions: Very little snow seen on the drive up, but the trails were snowy from the start. Primarily very hard-packed snow, lots of ice (especially on the steep areas). Snow depth is about 1 - 8 inches. It's not really much deeper at higher elevations. No blowdowns. Water crossings either frozen or bridged.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes - not used.
Windham might be barebootable, but microspikes preferred.
Black Dome & Thomas Cole - microspikes adequate, crampons preferred.
Indian Head & Twin - crampons required.
Peck and Prediger Roads were plowed. But Big Hollow Road was icy and rutted for the last couple hundred feet, so I parked near the plow turnaround. I drove past Mink Hollow (the north side) trailhead and Becker Hollow trailhead (for doing Hunter) and they were fine.
