trails: basin trail, hermit falls loop, black angel trail, bushwhack, basin rim trail, meader ridge trail, mt. meader trail, bike spot
conditions: dropped a bike at mt. meader trailhead and started hike at the basin pond boat launch.
trails were all damp from previous nights rain. muddy and a bit wet around basin pond. remained damp on the climb up to basin rim. the same with slippery rocks and ledge on black angel down past the former shelter site and on the ascent up towards blue brook shelter peak (this is the officially unnamed 2532 peak north of black angel trail and west of the now tentsite) . after crossing a small tributary of blue brook and before the trail turns away from the peak towards the col i started my bushwhack. steep to start, but it soon became milder through hardwoods with some undergrowth transitioning to more mature spruce shortly before reaching the highpoint. returned to the trail along roughly the same route and doubled back to basin rim trail. open ledges were drying off, but in the woods and shade still wet and slick up to meader. around this point there were some on and off showers so everything was wet, but still good footing descending meader trail expcept for in the steep switchbacks which were a bit eroded up high with slippery rocks and roots. pretty good walking below that to the road with some muddy sections.
water crossings were all fine today. crossing blue brook could be interesting in times of high water.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: great hike. very hot and muggy particularly climbing up through the basin. went through 3 liters of water and probably could have drank twice that over the course of the hike. very enjoyable short bushwhack up to blue brook shelter peak (possibly more appropriate to now call it "blue brook native soil tent pad peak" given the changes since wilderness designation). found one nice viewpoint to meader near the highpoint. great views from the east bump of meader and on the descent of the meader trail ledges. a couple passing showers, but otherwise a mix of sun and clouds. quick bike ride back to basin pond. very quiet out there today. such a beautiful area. great to be out.
