On the day of my hike, you really could have done this entire trek without snowshoes. However, I wore them anyway since they provided a more stable platform on an uneven surface. Plus, I kept thinking that as soon as I stopped to remove them, then it wouldn't be long before I'd need them, which would involve stopping again to put them back on!
Regardless of whether you do/don't wear snowshoes, some light traction is recommended since there were occasional icy spots.
There were a few blowdowns, but all were easy to step over, or circumvented by a short off-trail workaround.
Regarding parking, Long Pond Road is closed to vehicular traffic in wintertime. I parked at a plowed bump-out on the shoulder of High Street (adjacent to High Street Cemetery), and then walked the approximate 0.6 mile distance to the trailhead. Another winter-parking option is to park at the trailhead for the Glencliff Trail.
This was the first time doing this hike since completion of logging operations on the east side of the mountain. Several logging cuts are visible at lower end of trail, but not noticeable higher up. Regarding the west side of Blueberry Mountain, hikers should use caution since logging operations are still ongoing at that location.
