Date of Hike: Sat, Oct 18, 2008
Trail Conditions: From Lincoln Woods Visitor Center, Lincoln Woods Trail was mostly dry with occasional muddy spots. Wilderness Trail had numerous wet spots but most were easily passable with little effort unless you didn't seem them due to the dark. Bondcliff trail was with occasional icy spots near the top. River crossings were no problem. Bondcliff trail to Mt. Bond dry with an occasional icy spot. West Bond spur was dry and in good condition. Bondcliff trail to Guyot campsite dry to caretakers area not sure after that, also dry with some ice to twinway intersection. Twinway to Guyot was mostly frosted rocks. Twinway to South Twin Mtn was frosted rocks with occasional muddy and or icy spots to break through. North Twin spur to North Twin muddy in sections where it wasn't frozen but icy sections would break through. Twinway to Galehead hut was wet in quite a few spots and had a few icy sections that made for an interesting descent at spots. Trail to
Galehead summit was for the most park dry. Twin Brook Trail was muddy in numerous spots had quite a few blow downs and was actually hard to follow at times. Trail is in rough shape. Took Franconia Brook Trail approximately 3/4 way to Garfield Ridge by mistake and dealt with mud, lots of water and 3 or 4 blow downs. Mostly very wet and muddy. Franconia Brook Trail to Lincoln Woods Trail was very muddy in quite a few spots had a beaver pond that required the trail to be redirected. River crossings were for the most part uneventful.
Special Equipment Required: Nothing really. Layers to keep warm mostly as the temperature fluctuated roughly 30 degrees from below to above treeline.
Comments: I had thought I was on Lincoln Brook trail from the 13 falls tent site to hit Owl head but due to being tired and not really paying attention took the wrong trail. Overall a good day of hiking. Numerous people on the trails once I reached the twins area and all were friendly. Temps were really nice and the views were clear.
