Boott Spur to Split Rock Trail above treeline. Extreme winds from the ravines made progress above treeline almost impossible and a bit dangerous.
Boott Spur Trail Conditions below treeline: Mostly unbroken "dry" powder 4-8" deep, deriving from fresh snowfall during storm this past weekend. Also many downed trees across the trail (did I say "many"!?) . Some to climb over, some to duck under, and some you must go around.
Standing or running water below the snow in several places, not totally frozen over, at all elevations below the alpine zone, so watch your footing, lest you soak your toes and cut your day short.
I was able to progress the trail in three ways: Winter boots were adequate for the first third. Then stable-icers for the second third, then crampons. Ice axe proved helpful in spots, especially for descent, but not mandatory.
Overall, a pleasant 6 hour round trip hike mostly all below treeline. Saw no one all day. Below treeline of course means less wind. ( :
