Place- Catskills, Burrough's Range
Trip - Planned backpack from Woodland Valley clockwise over Wittenberg, Cornell, Slide, around to Giant Ledge and back.
Time - 11/29/08
A planned backpack ended up as just a day traverse so we carried 22lbish packs over the burrough's range from Woodland Valley to the Slide Mtn Area trailhead.
There is decent snow between Cornell and Slide which makes some of the ascent up the backside of Slide very tricky. The cornell crack was mostly loose powder and not much ice which makes it pretty hard because our 10pt crampons had nothing but rock under powder to grip.
Snowshoes were not carried and overall, IMO, not worth the weigh, although they would of been a little helpful in some spots in betwen cornell and slide, overall, not needed. Crampons/Snowshoes are especially needed on some of the ascents on Slide and Cornell with microspikes perfect for the low angle grades up Wittenberg and elsewhere..
