In searching through the threads, I've found discussions of bushwhacks that seem to approach Vose from the Carrigain Notch trail (perhaps following a ridge line beginning near Carrigain Brook?)
[NH Blitz part 2: Sandwich & Tecumseh and Vose Spur; Papa Bear],
but...

Can you get to Vose from Carrigain Peak, across the secondary peak to the northeast (along the Pemi boundary)?

Thanks,

Frodo did it last winter, day after Christmas. Ask him.

We found this in the log when we did the peak last July:
12-26-04 Merry Christmas
Headed over from
Carrigain. Fun.
No Bugs !

Vose Spur from Carrigain

Is usually thought of as very difficult. The minor peak near 4200 feet is thought to have a cairn and register. The register on vose spur itself has been removed and replaced several times.

It is pretty thick between the two, but not as bad as other places I've been to in the Whites... Mostly living spruce trees with some dry dead sections. When I did it last Dec 26th, there wasn't too much snow on the ground, otherwise it would have been a "spruce trap mine field" between the 2. The other thing to keep in mind is that it's VERY steep heading down from the minor peak to the col of Vose Spur (which is open talus). I also never saw the cannister (not that I was even looking) on the minor peak. It is definitely harder to climb Vose Spur via Carrigain summit than by taking the standard route from Carrigain Notch, but it is certainly a more interesting route...

Thanks PB for bringing back some memories of what I wrote in the cannister :D BTW, do you have book that was up there, did you write it down, or do you just have one heck of a photographic memory? Just wondering...

Well, you'll find this amusing, but I was considering the bw as an alternative to going the long way 'round the Desolation Trail on a day-hike from the Sawyer River Road. I guess it's actually NOT a short cut!

Given the rainy forecast for Friday/Saturday, I'm thinking bushwhacking may not be the way to go.

Thanks again for the tips; maybe I'll try this one later.

I took a picture. I posted that here, then had second thoughts and took it out and just put up the quote. Here's the photo:

PB,

As Wayne and Garth would say, "Way cool!" :D I have to start doing that!

I find it interesting that it was 4 months until another person was up there. I was the ONLY one to climb it last winter???? I find that hard to believe actually... Maybe people signed different pages??? Though that register was more straightforward than many I have seen... (businesscards, napkins, etc.) Surprising...

I have a suspicion that PB's "second thoughts" have to do with the fact that I complained once (or twice) that those pages are somewhat sacred and you should only get to view them if you took the time and effort to hike there.
of course, Frodo is in such a category but most of the rest of us aren't.

I too, take pics of the pages (partly at PB's prompting) but I won't share :D
