Looking forward to a trip in the area this autumn :)

Not to worry. It's too much work for "the masses" to paddle to the north end from the campground, and there aren't really many guides doing trips there for the "Gucci" crowd.
Besides, just stopping in Errol on the way would be enough to scare away the "cultured urbanite paddlers"!

Thanks for posting this. Having just recently bought a kayak I'll put this lake on my list. Screw the crowds, I excel in ignoring people.

If we can take pontoon transport out there (we stay for a week, way too much food and gear to get in a canoe), I bet the "Gucci crowd" could figure out how to make that call, too.

ftr, this isn't the first time mass media has "discovered" Umbagog - Derek Jackson of the Globe write about it at least once a year. And every time one of those stories hits, we have a harder time the following year getting reservations.

Here's some news to warm the hearts of everyone seeking peace and quiet. The Old Gray Lady has discovered Umbagog and trumpeted the news far and wide today.

I'm jumping on the "pulling up the ladder" bandwagon, but...

We make a yearly pilgrimage. Perhaps I'm just getting more sensitive to it, but it seems the large motor boat traffic has been increasing for the last 10 years or so. I see more pleasure boats every year, less fishing boats. It used to be that the only large boat we saw was the Northern Waters pontoon boat.

Land values in the Errol area have been increasing by leaps and bounds too. LL Cote now looks like a strip mall. (Although I understand that much of the income comes during snowmobile season.)

It's inevitable I suppose.
