2-10-12. This trip was mostly a recon. to try a bushwack to the Spaulding shelter from the Caribou pond road[south branch] with the purpose of exploring a back way
to Abraham.
tr. cond;I parked at the Sugarloaf golf course.1]wacked over to the c.v.r. from S.L.,aimed for Stoney mtn,due west.Went very smooth.2]flew down c.v.r. to main fork[ignore all the rights off to west, follow river on right].From main fork, went left[south west]total time about 3 hours so far. 3]looked for herd paths on left to wack up to the a.t. Here the fun started! Found a 10-20 year old foot path with orange flagging, very hard to follow but got me up some what towards ridge line.the orange markings stopped at a clearing. After finding no obvious route up except through even thicker spruce and with possible weather coming in, I turned around.I felt good but knew my legs were sore from sinking up to my waist .time to find my way back to the logging roads.Total time for wack,2 hours
comments;most snow I have seen since last winter was below Caribou pond.Very cold day, started off with minus zero wind chills. This wack looks easy during the summer but winter was a bear..I was counting on the snow being a little more compact for the wack but no dice.Got ride back to my wack spot in james bond machine[see pic].thank you driver.
2-11-12. short hike up a.t. from route 27 towards crockers
tr. cond;On sat. morning,I saw many cars at the trail head, so I assumed the trail was broken out.It looked so good at the start I left my snowshoes in the car.Dumb move! after 10 minutes, footbed ended.without post holing I made it up the start of the Crocker ridge line[stoney brook mtn]but started to really sink.A moose decided to mess up the trail also.I realized that all the cars were people who must have just parked there or were camping out for a few days.Glad I turned around early because for the 1st time,I seemed to suffer some exposure to my face which had seemed warm and fine.Lessons learned.
