conditions: packed trough with a dusting on top. easy to follow for the most part even without fresh tracks. some small drainages broken open and easily stepped over. hardest to follow trail between kilkenny junction and mt. cabot trail. after that junction easy to follow and well travelled. easy to follow (as of today) from cabin to summit.
kilkenny ridge north from cabot has not seen used recently and was deep with a breakable crust. same for kilkenny southbound. mt. cabot trail heading to lancaster was well travelled.
york pond road after n.f. boundary was rough and icy and the driving was slick at very low speeds.
equipment: usual winter. snowshoes from car to summit. one fellow coming up after me using crampons seemed to do fine.
comments: just the hike i needed today. first time on cabot in winter and it was really beautiful. the ice on the hardwoods in the notch was flickering colors like a christmas tree in the sun and breeze. great views to the presidentials and north to the bulge and horn.
