Date of Hike: 11/3/12

Trail: Monroe Trail

Trail Conditions: Snow flurries all day, lower mountain with wet leaves. Upper mountain with 2- 3 inches of snow. 2 down trees on lower mountain at about 0.3 miles and at about 1.0 miles. Blowing and drifting snow on the summit. No trail erosion from hurricane Sandy.

Special Equipment Required: Used microspikes on the upper 0.5 mile going hiking up and hiking down. But everyone else on the trail that day was bare boots.

Comments: Just below the summit there is a sign to stay off the fragile vegetation. Due to snowdrift, the trail disappears at this spot. So the inclination is to go straight up, thereby walking across the krumholtz. When I descended from the summit I found the trail.
A logical solution to this confusing spot would be to put a rock cairn to identify the actual trail on the ascent. There are no cairns (that I saw) on the summit.
