From reading trip reports, etc, I take it that the approach from the West is a bit shorter.

Also, is the preffered direction of the loop over the summit from the South so as to do the steep part of the summit cone uphill??

My wife thanks you.

People do it from both directions with regularity, but I do prefer approaching from the south, going from Wind Gap and heading north on the LT to the summit. That way, you get several outlooks of the summit along the way, with the southern cliffs looming closer and closer.

I think (don't have the distances right in front of me) the eastern approach is slightly shorter, but they're about the same either way.

Camel's Hump East vs. West

Burroughs trail from the west about 2.3 miles with a fairly long moderately steep section on the upper half. Same with Forestry trail to Long Trail, somewhat longer, easy up to the LT then mixed rocks and fairly steep up to the top. Monroe from the east a mile or so longer but easier and more varied with no long steep pitches. Take your choice partly depending on which side is more convenient to reach, but if hiking up pretty steep rocks isn't your (or your wife's) thing, I'd suggest the Monroe may be more enjoyable. A great and reasonable hike from any direction except from the north on Bamforth, that's looooong.
Enjoy!

As usual, I'm with John on this - Monroe is on one of the spectrum, and Bamforth Ridge on the other. Both are great hikes, but I wouldn't ask my wife to do Bamforth as her first ascent of Camel's Hump.

keep in mind that monroe is the most popular route up camels hump so plan for lots of foot traffic if approaching via monroe, especially on a weekend.

If you're looking for a nice, easy route, head up the Monroe and, from the summit, descend South on the LT to the Alpine Garden Trail and the latter back to the Monroe, stopping by the bomber crash site, of course.

The most interesting ascent, aside from Bamforth Ridge, is from the West: Forest City>LT. That section of the LT between Wind Gap and the Camel's Hump summit is fantastic.
