Doin a couple days with my son and weather dependent we may go in or out from Imp, is there a obvious whack site to shorten our Imp walk or is this an occasional-only route used? Time wise is it even worth it?...he hates whacks after Black Pond and Franconia Falls recently and will have weekend size packs on.....thanks ctsparrow...sue

Sue,

I came through there recently and used the bushwhack via Camp Dodge on the way out. I believe it saved roughly two to three miles. It is a very short bushwhack as we did it. As bushwhacks go this one is very short and easy.

The aproach used is described here: Bushwhack to Camp Dodge from Imp

Go to the portion of the report that deals with Middle Carter to Route 16 and the Bushwhack.

Good luck.

Earl

The bushwack is trivial and has been described many times in these pages.

Basically, the route goes from just below the point where S. Imp Tr almost touches Cowboy Brook to Camp Dodge. Just follow the path of least resistance (it is mostly open woods) paralleling the brook. There are some old logging roads in the area--if you find one, fine; if not, then it isn't a problem.

There is not much "whack" in it. Its a old logging road that is used often enough that the grass and brush is trampled down.

thanks all...i should have done a thread search first also...sorry about that  ctsparrow

Several people including BigEarl and me have done a true whack, but if you go farther until after the trail leaves the brook there is a genuine logging road as mentioned. Unfortunately it saves less than 2 miles but still worth it.
