Looking at spending a few leisurely days on the east side of Pemi loop in late October. Will likely stay just south of Bondcliff at a spot discussed more than once here for night one. Don't want to stay at Guyot for night 2 but I see on the map that Twinway between Mt Guyot and South Twin looks pretty flat where you could get a ways off trail to camp. Is this a reasonable choice?

Your thoughts on this appreciated...

You just have to go up there and look for spots yourself, I guess. The ridge is fairly thickly wooded -- there are a few herd paths that lead either to toilet paper or rock slides. I've never seen a good camping spot up there and if I did I wouldn't reveal it on a website anyway and my guess is same goes for most people here. Best bet if you don't want to stay at Guyot is to drop down to Ethan Pond Trail and find a spot there.

It can be done with a small tent, sufficient time to find a spot, and sufficient water in your pack. The slope is pretty gentle, but the forest is pretty thick balsam and the usual blowdowns, rocks, etc make most of the ground a little rough.

There are spots. I've stayed in half-dozen of them between South Twin and Bondcliff.

And, no, I can't tell you them because I've had someone in my planned for spot when I rolled in during a rainstorm at midnight. They were PISSED when I made them leave (just kidding...we just kept on hiking through the night).

That is a pretty flat stretch - nice trail...the big issue in that area is that it is no water along this section until you get to Galehead...
I would also think that is a pretty short hiking day (from just below Bondcliff to the area you mentioned)- of course - that may be just what you are looking for!

As noted in the opening thread "a few leisurely days". Yep.. No hurry at all. Start late. Stop early. Pause to enjoy the views. I'm not even sure how many days we'll take... :)

Thanks for the input folks.

We found a spot between the Twins. It was dark when we finally decided to just pitch it, but if it hadn't been and we had gone a little further we would have found something even better. Isn't that the way?
