Carmel was out here in September (yah, I am a little late in posting these pix) and we went camping on Kauai. Due to some small issues like multiple leg breaks, it was my first time in a tent in something insane like 1.5 years. Anyway, I was psyched to be in a tent so I took this shot:

Thoughts?

I took the "standard" tent shot too:

but I think I like the first one better.

I vote for the first one. I'm a sucker for the "looking out" shots because it puts ME in the tent. I like to wake up in the morning and take a shot before I get up, with the sun just rising. I also like to take shots where I'm sitting on the edge of a mountain and my knees to boots are in the picture. I easily feel what it was like to be there on that mountain.

Bingo. I like both shots but definitely the first one better, but I couldn't clearly say why. Thanks for expressing it so well for me. :)

Darren, would you mind sharing the camera settings on that first shot. The depth of field is impressive.

I really like the second shot - the sweeping lines of the clouds bring your eye into the picture, then zooms you along the coastline right into the tent. I can practically feel the ocean breeze. Great warm light too. Sweet!

I think the greenery kind of creates a visual barrier in the first image, but maybe it's just the claustrophobic side of my personality wanting to be outside. Still nice!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I agree with the "it puts me in the tent" comment, I think that is why I like it.

I focused on the small "m" in Marmot and shot handheld at ISO 200, f11, 1/125 sec, at 10mm. When shooting that wide you dont need f32 to get huge depth of field.

Tim - here is another one with some good clouds (I used a 2 stop soft GND filter to hold the sky back):

And a nice sunset shot:

Too many to post in this thread. I have a gallery of about a dozen shots here:

Some from camping on the beach and some from when I surprised Carmel with a stay at a resort at the end of the trip. :)

Aloha
