I used to get to the High Peaks often when I lived nearby, but never had occasion to camp there. I plan to be pitching a tent for me & the kids tomorrow late PM as I pass through, and was wondering if anyone had campsite suggestions in close proximity to the Loj (I won't be arriving early enough to hike out to a spot). Nothing fancy view-wise or anything, just a place to crash. Thx!

as well on 73 just east of the Loj road is Whisperin Pines CG..hk

Yeah, I've stayed at Whispering Pines many times, often just stopping there on friday afternoon, and they still had sites available. No guarantee, but I will say this, the last few times I've stayed there, there were a LOT of available sites.

Good luck, and have a great time!

Oh yeah, and welcome to VFTT! :)

My son and I are heading up on Monday, and we are going to stay at South Meadows. I've never stayed there before, so what are the chances of getting a site on Monday? What can we expect there? Thanks.

Mass- don't expect much. There are limited spaces along the road on the way in and then at the parking area at the end. These are primitive sites. As Harry said, there is an overflow camping area past the Loj itself (A winter Gathering happened there). Monday should be fine for a site.

PattyV - The folks at Wispering Pines are great and you might even make a deal to finish up there with a shower when you come out.

FYI - if you do get a spot in South Meadows take the truck road into Marcy Dam if that is the area you are headed in. It begins off the parking lot at the far end.

Also - for clarification, the South Meadows is a side road to the Left off the Loj Road. The trailhead for Mt. Van Hoevenberg heads off to the left, a wonderful "little" hike.

Lastly -- PATTY!! Where you been??? You just joined a cool place - plan on not having as much free time... ;)

There's no water on S. Meadows but there is a privy whose trail is just opposite the gate in front of the truck road. I doubt there'd be any problems on a Mon. night. Worse comes to worse: car crash.

I'm confused. Just past the Loj? Does ADK have overflow camping?
