Candlemas Day (AKA Groundhog day)

The various US surrogates for German badgers are being watched for signs of activity today. Regardless of the presence or lack thereof of sunshine its half way through winter with only 7 weekends left. Still some snowpack up north but its looking a bit tired.

The Christian holiday Candlemas and the secular celebration of Groundhog Day both have their origins in pagan Celtic traditions. The holiday of Imbolc marked the halfway point between the winter solstice (Yule) and the spring equinox (Ostara). One can see how the day might come to be known as the time when groundhogs, bears, or other hibernating animals began to stir, hopefully signaling that spring is just around the corner.

Looks like that one is staying south of New England but it going to wrap back into Maine and possibly NH on Monday and Tuesday. Eastern Maine will get snow, the whites look to be clody
