Just a quick Saturday outing before the storm rolled in. Trail was icy in spots, with the ice concealed under 6" or so of snow, but we had no trouble getting to the summit with light traction.

Cold all day, but not as windy as the Observatory forecast had led us to expect.

There are a few more shots here.

Happy holidays!

In my experience the Observatory forecast is way over-blown for most of the whites. For the Northern peaks and Washington, I would count on it, but the variance between those two places and the other White mtn peaks can be quite high.

Agreed. The Obs forecast applies to above-treeline territory, the way I think about it. Other than the Presies and Franconia Ridge, the weather is generally much more benign than the Obs.

Looks like a great hike. The view of Franconia Ridge on a bluebird day from Cannon and Lonesome Lake is one of my favorites.

Someone in another post mentioned a website called mountain-forecast.com. You can select exact mountain ranges and mountains all over the world and it has a lower elevation and summit forecast, wind and forecast maps, etc. Just about every mountain in the Whites is on it. I have been using this site quite a bit the past few months and it has been pretty accurate. Temp forecasts and wind speeds correlate very well with my Kestrel meter. I'd check it out.
