Trail Conditions: wet in places, a bit icy in others.
Special Equipment Required: None.
Comments: I started at the hikers' parking lot off Route 93 Exit 34B and went up the Kinsman Ridge Trail to the summit tower at Cannon. Temperature at the trailhead was 55F. This was about 11:20 am. The hike was easier than expected; I was afraid there might be thick layers of ice, but that was not the case.
There's no significant water to cross, just a small waterfall that runs across the trail near the bottom. The first 1000 feet or so are very doable, and then I started to see frost on the trees. Higher up, rime was falling to the ground, making the slides a bit slippery. But they were not completely covered with ice, just a thin layer here and there (hard to see it, so be careful). I had brought my microspikes but never felt a need for them.
There's a flat bit of trail as you approach the summit, which is pretty muddy and wet.
By the time I was coming back, around 2 pm, more rocks on the trail had picked up a very thin layer of ice, so coming back down was a bit more difficult than going up.
It was a really nice day! Glad I decided to go, despite some misgivings.
