Cannon Mountain via Taft Cut Off, Taft Trail
Date of Hike: Friday, March 27, 2009
Trail Conditions: Spring snow, blue ice, bare spots
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes
Comments:
Mittersill parking lots very muddy - don't attempt to park in them with 2WD.
This is probably the last weekend one will be able to snowshoe bottom to top unless we get more snow, as the stretch of the Taft trail between the peak of Mittersill and the groomed Cannon ski area is very thin and narrow, snowwise.
Light traction a good idea for climbing the stairs to the summit tower. I spent very little time on the deck, as large pieces of ice were falling off the communications tower.
Spring snow on the ascent (snowshoes didn't really sink) with patches of blue ice/slush. Snow was starting to set up while descending this evening.
