1/7/07 We decided after a long wet hike of Cabot on Saturday to hit one of my winter list's shorter hikes. I had a couple friends that were willing to join us and it was Mike's B-day to boot!
We parked a car at Cannon parking lot and went down to Lafayette Place parking to start our hike up to Hi-Cannon trail. It was a beautifull sunny day with clouds still sitting on the Franconia Ridge peaks. The parking lot was shear ice. The trail was icy but you could work around it via rocks and dirt.
The hike up Hi-Cannon was warm and beautifull. We hit ice most of the way up. Crampons not really needed, stablizers were perfect. Mine were in my pack and didn't bother getting them out, was having too much fun hiking in just a shirt all the way up and doing a little rock climbing too! The ladders were clear of any snow or ice and the sun was bright as we came up for a perfect view accross to the clearing peaks.
As we arrived up at the top, wind gusts were picking up so we finally put a wind jacket on for climbing up the tower. Had our lunch inside the heated high lodge, and decided on our route down.... There were 2 other groups at the top having lunch and they all were commenting on the state of ice on all the trails.
Since it was Mikey's b-day, and he wanted to slide down the side of the ski trail.... that was our plan. The mountain was very slow and very few skiers coming down. Butt & pack sliding we went for a very fast descent. Lots of laughs & okay one pair of ripped ski pants later. (never mind the bruise the next day) who's????
It was a wonderfull fun hike with good friends! One less on my winter list too.
3-all season and 14 winter left.....
Pics of the day!
