Anyone who likes alpine traversing might enjoy this off trail hike. Starting at the bathroom building at the north end of Profile Lake, hike directly up a steep gully all the way to the top of the east shoulder of Cannon above the cliff. Wander west toward the main summit, but on a low point on the ridge, angle left down into the south bowl. Head straight down thru open scrub til you reach the large open slope down and left. Follow a faint ski trail down the brook until it peters out, then bushwack through firs, then open woods right of the brook until the snowmobile trail is reach just north of Lafayette Place. I left my car at the climbers parking lot so I had about a mile walk back on the nicely groomed trail.
I used MSR Denali Evo snowshoes the whole way. Some might want crampons as well. The snow on the north side was icy and rock hard. Nice alpine adventure with great views. Maybe 3-5 hrs rt.
