Saturday turned out to be a great day for hiking in the Whites. Temps in the high 50s and low 60s and mostly sunny. Snow covered 100% of the trail, except for the first 1/4 mile or so, where it was spotty (and parts of the trail near the summit). You could probably bare-boot it if you wanted to, but I would recommend crampons or snowshoes. The wife used snowshoes and had no trouble, and I used crampons, with a breakthrough here and there (one revealing a very deep opening where the snow melt has eroded much of the snow from underneath). With this said, the snow still seemed very solid, and more so in the shady areas of the trail. I would stay in the middle of the trail, on the snow spine, where it is the hardest. Stepping on snow near rocks or the base of trees will almost always result in breaking through.
Saturday night, we stayed at the AMC’s Highland Center for the first time. It was a great place, and I would recommend it to all. They have a bunkhouse that is very affordable, if you are on a budget.
Enjoy,
Steve
