Trail Conditions: Crusty snow down below with deep powder on the ridge between Mittersill and Cannon..Mix of windblown and powder to the summit via taft Slalom..Deep snow from the Lift station to the tower
Equipment: we used snowshoes the whole way..took snowmobile track up which was mostly packed to just below the lift station on Mittersill..some alternating windblown and deep powder from there..(3500feet)..Quite breezey and cold on summit and we lingered for sunset so plenty of layers were used
Comments..fine first winter hike of the year...While technically I guess these trails are closed during "ski" season, the summits are not open for skiing and we saw more snowshoe than ski tracks along the way from Mittersill to cannon summit..Cold and breezey on top where we waited a bit for rocket who gave us an hour head start..We followed the snowmobile track up most of the way..packed out ..moderately steep..took a steeper ski trail on descent which had some deep pockets of unconsolidated snow..fantastic sunset and a good day out with tim and jeremy
