Trail from the Tramway parking area to the summit was firm with about 3" of powder. Traction needed today. I wore my MSR Snowshoes the whole way and they worked well. No blowdowns. It's been awhile since I've been on that leg of the trail and I almost forgot how steep it is. I dropped my water bottle and it went sliding down the trail like a bob sled, even going around the corners. I found it on the way down. This wasn't my planned hike. I had gone to Lafayette Camp Grounds ready to do the Kinsmans. I got stuck (even with AWD) and had to be winched out by a tow truck. I lost about 2 1/2 hrs. so I decided to go over and do Canon. Here's the scoop. That parking area that is usually used in the summer for the Lonesome Lake Tr., is a snowmobile path in the winter. The road is well packed but as soon as you try to pull off in you go. So, don't go into that area. Park by the Ranger Cabin. It's all plowed there. The Tow Truck operator say that he pulls about 20 or 30 cars a winter out of that summer parking lot. Someone should put a sign there. The reason I went today was that it was supposed to be sunny, but everything was socked in up that way. But still a good day on the trail.
