It's not that unusual.On the Caps Ridge Trail, the typical "Alpine Zone" signs are often missing – other trails in the Whites have them, but not always, here.The Yellow blazes could also be a birt faded. Maintenances varies depending on the trail.It might be less emphasis on signage here, but the Forest Protection Area signs are key. Always good to stay alert.

In the trees, blazes just confirm I'm on an official trail (vs. a herd path), so they're not needed as often. I find them helpful above treeline when the route is tougher to discern. I hiked Madison & Adams last week and it was just boulder-to-boulder on the ascents...no footpath to see. Same on the Caps on Jefferson. I often just beelined from cairn to cairn, picking my own route.
