It's not that unusual.On the Caps Ridge Trail, the typical "Alpine Zone" signs are often missing – other trails in the Whites have them, but not always, here.The Yellow blazes could also be a birt faded. Maintenances varies depending on the trail.It might be less emphasis on signage here, but the Forest Protection Area signs are key. Always good to stay alert:).
 
In the trees, blazes just confirm I'm on an official trail (vs. a herd path), so they're not needed as often. I find them helpful above treeline when the route is tougher to discern. I hiked Madison & Adams last week and it was just boulder-to-boulder on the ascents...no footpath to see. Same on the Caps on Jefferson. I often just beelined from cairn to cairn, picking my own route.
