conditions: after hiking kibby mountain we got back on to beaudry road and followed it to where west branch road turns off to the left in an area with various campers and rvs. west branch road immediately became rougher and some may want to park at it's junction and walk in though it adds a number of miles to the hike. one washed out bridge along the way would stop most low clearance vehicles, but trucks or some all wheel drives can continue up to where west branch road turns uphill to the right in a cleared area. most non 4 wheel drives will want to park here and walk the extra mile or so, but if you continue the road is quite rough for a couple hundred yards, crosses a small stream then becomes better up to a fork where we parked. i do not have the exact mileage splits in front of me, but drop and email if you would like them. from the junction we followed the left fork of the road which made for nice hiking with a few wets spots. a bit over a mile it became more of an atv and snowmobile trail and began to really climb up caribou proper. near the top it became steep and very rough and really could only be travelled by snowmobiles in winter. the highpoint is on a bump to the right as you crest the summit.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: a nice follow up hike to kibby. thankfully jeremy has a good 4 wheel drive and we were able to get in without much issue. some nice views on the road walk up and from points shortly below the summit. made it back down just as the drizzle that had been falling turned to more of a steady rain. thanks to jeremy for some good hiking and for abusing his vehicle to get out there. a very interesting area.
