I'm planning to hike up Carr Mtn later this month. The new edition of the WMG says that maintenance has resumed on the western end of the trail so I'm hoping to do a traverse rather than an out-n-back from the east. I was wondering if anyone has any recent first-hand experience over there?

First hand no, but when I was on top of Carr on May 6 I met 2 guys who barebooted and postholed up the westside. They reported some trouble finding the trail but they did make it. I think the worst areas they said were after the snowline which was about 2900' at the time.

A few years ago the western trailhead was obscure...I recall parking near a private home/camp, then pushing eastward through an overgrown field for some distance... a hundred yards or more... and finding the trail's beginning where the field bordered the woods. Once on the trail, it was smooth sailing to the top.

Perhaps the trailhead's easier to find these days....

Here's a link to an earlier thread with some good info. When I came down two years ago, I remember a pretty good parking area a little west of the house. Coming in from Rte. 25, go up the road near the fish hatchery in Warren. The trail sign is a little ways up the road. After the parking area, maybe a half mile from Rte. 25, follow the road to its end near the house, and go across the field to the right (south) of the house. I remember a sign or blaze on a post in the field. The trail then joins logging trails which make for easy, smooth walking. It got rougher further up.

As part of a larger plan for this area, the USFS is planning that "A low-standard parking area for the Carr Mt. hiking trail will be improved by reshaping a small area and surfacing it with gravel."
