trails: sawyer river road, signal ridge trail

conditions: sawyer river road snowmobile packed. signal ridge trail had a nice snowshoe track with an inch or so of new/blown powder down low increasing to 6+ inches higher up with many long and more deeply drifted sections. a bit sticky down low, but nice powder once into the switchbacks. the open section of signal ridge was blown off down to crusty hardpack. numerous streamlets to step over in the lower part of the trail. followed the old route of the trail on the way down bypassing the new long reroute at the old carrigain notch trail junction. a good winter option. water crossings are open, but not a problem to cross.

equipment: we wore snowshoes the whole hike.

comments: nice day on carrigain. some interesting views and skies over the course of the day with the near constant sound of strong winds blowing in the trees. surprisingly winds were not too strong crossing signal ridge due to protection from the summit with just a stray gust or two that had much effect. beautiful in the hardwoods with the afternoon sun on the hike out. new powder in the track made for a fast yet mellow descent. thanks to cynthia for a good day.
