Loop hike starting at Signal Ridge Trail Head. Followed SRT until the split and then traveled down the Carrigain Notch Trail. While on the Carrigain Notch Trail, at the point where you have to go around the boulder sitting in middle of the trail, we came across Peppersass & Friends. After some good natured mutual ribbing of our individual crazy pursuits in the Whites we went our separate ways. We continued on our way all the way out to Stillwater Junction. Came back to the junction with Desolation Trail, ate lunch and then started up.
The WMG isn't known for pulling punches on trail descriptions and Desolation was exactly as described. There was one section, not too far below the seriously steep part, where it looks like a rock slide has occurred. It's passable but care should be taken due the the rocks not being fully seated in their new home and the steep dropoff. What was interesting is that despite exhortations not do do so we met 9 people, in four different groups, with heavy packs on going down Desolation. Intrepid souls all.
Aside from the rock slide on Desolation noted above all of the trails were in good shape with only minor sporadic muddy areas and a few blowdowns that were non-factors.
Bugs came and went depending on location. They were particularly active in the first few miles of the SRT and at Stillwater Junction.
Special Equipment Required: None
