I tuck a tail into a side pocket, crampons facing out, then, open the binding so it rests on top of the pack, then I'll either run the compression strap over the outside for regular hiking; I run it over the outside and through the toe hole if we'll be getting jostled much (running, falling, sledding, skiing) so that if it comes loose I won't lose a shoe.
