Date of Hike: Sat., Feb. 18, 2012
Trails: 19 Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail
Conditions: 19 Mile Brook Tr. was a hard packed sidewalk with a dusting of snow. Carter Dome was pretty much the same with maybe 1" of fresh powder. Stream crossings were all snow-bridged over and solid. We wore Hillsounds to Zeta Pass. From Zeta Pass to the dome and back we switched to snowshoes while it was loose drifted snow. One person ahead of us booted up to the Dome. He was carrying snowshoes, but didn't use them. Why, I don't know. More work without them in my opinion. After smoothing out his prints, we left a nice snowshoe track. Several lovely ladies came up after us in snowshoes, but a large group of booters where on there way up after them, so who knows what shape the trail is in now. Trails in good shape with no blow-downs. Beautiful cornices hanging over the tops of the trees on the approach to the summit. Great day out with Bill Marcotte and Bill Schor today. Nice seeing Patty Dewey heading up to S. & M. Carter this morning.
