On the way home from Rangeley decided to do Carter Dome.
Left the 19 Mile Brook Trail Head at 12:42.
Ten minutes in I met Kevin running towards me in snowshoes. He was finishing up a 10 mile run to South Carter. Good luck in next weekends XC Ski Race up the Auto Road
Met a Father & Son headed for an overnight at the Hut. Then a young couple headed out. Then a middle age couple.
Started up Carter Dome Trail at 1:37. Met a guy headed down, that had gone to Carter Moriah Trail jct.
The weather was pretty nice but fairly windy.
Headed up from the jct at 2:55. Met 2 guys heading down from the summit, who had stopped for some pictures.
Along the way there were some great views of the Presidentals
Then I could see the summit area. The trees had become shorter and the track was pretty blown in but still easy to follow.
Then I came out into the open...
Progressed slowly while getting blown around. I didn't have face protection or my goggles on...but it wasn't cold!!!
I had decided on a 3 o'clock turn around time and it was a few minutes past that...
After about 5 minutes of battling the wind I turned and headed back
I knew I was probably very close to the summit but I was feeling like I didn't need to get there. In 2 minutes I was back in the trees and heading out...stopping to take pictures and admire the fantastic beauty!!!
Got back to the Trailhead at 5:42 without seeing anyone else on the way out.
Downloaded GPS today and found the summit was 800 feet further...
Do I wish I'd gone on... Today, I feel I should have gotten back in the trees, geared up and experienced the elements further. Yesterday...a good choice
It was a great hike and saw some amazing scenery and had a decent workout
