Carter Dome / Mt. Hight - 1/12/2014
Up 19MB/CMT - Down CMT/CDT/19MB
Trail Conditions: Heavy ice, especially on steep sections. Water bridges gone. Remaining snow fully frozen/crusted over old postholes. I'm a few days delayed with this report , however the week's weather and forecast lead me to believe that the trail conditions are still pretty much as above and will continue to be so for the 1/18-19 weekend - though with colder temps.
Special Equipment Required: Hillsounds adequate (barely) to reach the hut, but crampons better. Up Carter Dome's S face, crampons an extremely good idea. A few of us used snowshoes at the outset, but could have left them in the trunk. Despite moderate temps, wind made full face protection necessary on Hight - without this, we would have bypassed.
The 12th was a very windy day, and the winds were especially impressive at the hut and lake, with the stiff spruce actually waving, and ungodly noises screaming from the hut's anemometer and surrounding protrusions. Atop Hight, things were tamer, with gusts in the 40-50mph range.
