Date of Hike: Tue. 01-05-10
Trails: 19 Mile Bk, Carter Dome, Carter-Moriah, North Carter, Imp, Joe Dodge Cutoff.
19 Mile Bk trail was broken to beyond jct. with the Carter Dome Trail. The Carter Dome Tr. and all other trails except the Imp were unbroken. We wore snowshoes from the get go and kept them on all day.
About 12" of powder on the Carter Dome Tr. From Zeta pass to the Dome deep snow about 24" with higher drifts. Full snow shoes were sinking in at least a foot.
From Zeta Pass over S. & M. Carter deep, deep, snow with waist high drifts in places. Very slow going. Snow laden leaners with ice balls constantly in your face. Blow downs too numerous to count. Trail hard to follow at times.
North Carter Trail had the most snow with lots of blow-downs. Imp loop had been broken out today.
There were 3 of us today, Bill Marcotte and Donna Dobbins and I. We broke the trail, but it's far from being consolidated. No other hikers on the ridge.
