Date of Hike: 2/2/08
Trail Conditions: Fresh foot of snow with high winds made this a fun trip. Snowshoes a must from the trailhead to the hut, especially since we were breaking trail after the junction on 19Mile. Wore crampons from the hut to Carter Dome to dig in for more secure footing. Snowshoes proved to be more of an hindrance on this section. Once at the top, the snow drifts made it a post hole nightmare and quickly moved to the safety of the trees to put the snowshoes back on. Snowshoes essential for the trip down Carter-Moriah.
Special Equipment Required: snowshoes, crampons, poles, the works.
Comments: A helpful hint: keep a shovel in the back of your car. When our group arrived at the trailhead, the parking area was not plowed and had to dig a parking spot for our friend's mini. Anything with 4WD could make it in with minimal spinning.
