As a side trip for a night stay at Carter Notch Hut, we went up to Carter Dome.
As previously stated in many reports 19MB is "paved" although it was getting some postholes today (12/31) as we came out, with the warm temperatures. Many of the small brooks were also opened today. The Carter Moriah trail was broken out and we had great "snowshoe steps" to follow up the steeps. We could see Farmers snowshoe prints from the day before. After making that climb you really appreciate what he is doing!! The sun on our backs felt great and the peek through views to the Prezies, as well as the views back to Wildcats and south were awesome. With a few more feet on Carter Dome the views from the top will be spectacular (though predicted weather may slow that down). With the sun warming the snow and hikers going down before us the trip back down to the hut started fast but became tougher once we hit the steep section after the Pulpit. It seemed most before us slid down which took out the "steps" that were there. We tried not to slide but ended up unintentionally doing it in some spots. Two hikers we passed as they were going up were barebooting and putting some steps in. One of the warmest nights that I've stayed at Carter Notch. Great two days out.
