Trail Conditions: Yes, the trails are wet and muddy. Up Imp Trail (S Branch) and N. Carter Trail, then along Carter-Moriah, Kenduskeag, and Rattle River to US 2. No blowdowns at all. Trails all in good shape and easily followed - though there seem to be no blue blazes on Imp Trail and few white blazes on the Carter-Moriah Trail. This is not a problem - anyone there probably has a pretty good idea where he or she is.
Huge distance of bog bridges on Kenduskeag and Rattle River Trails in excellent repair. New stone steps being constructed southbound from Imp Shelter. The trail work is really spectacular in this whole range - the steeps are as safe as possible and the bogs are as bridged as anyone could hope.
No special equipment required - it's mid-August, the pesky insects seem to be disappearing.
Saw 12 people, 1 dog on trail. We hiked out to the Rattle River Trailhead in a bit less than 8 hours, got picked up hitch-hiking back to the Imp Trailhead within a few minutes. (Thanks to the gentleman from Pittsburgh!!) As soon as we were in the car, the skies opened up. Our luck in hiking the whole day in dry weather held.
