Went up the Imp Trail on Friday the 7th, and over the ridge down into Carter Notch. Up the Imp Trail (counterclockwise), there was a hint of a trail, which appeared to continue down the the other side. After that, I broke trail without any sign of there being one at all pretty much until Carter Dome. Passed five people coming up, none in snow shoes.
Surface snow was crunchy, but collapsed easily, and below the surface my feet, even in snow shoes, typically sank several inches, making for slow walking.
On Saturday, I noticed many cars at the 19 Mile Brook trail, and another at Imp, so would suspect the trails are in much better condition now, having been packed down by more hikers.
