trails: roadwalk, camp dodge cut-off, imp trail, north carter trail, carter-moriah trail, carter dome trail, nineteen mile brook trail, wildcat ridge trail, ski trails.
conditions: a light coating of snow over hardpack and ice up through camp dodge. a continuing light coat of snow down low on imp with substantial ice. coverage increased once on north carter trail with snowshoe worthy depths up high and onto the ridge. pretty loosely packed over middle and south carter then a highway down to zeta pass. deepest snow of the day up high on carter dome with a lightly packed track that has seen more feet since we passed through. decent snow down to the notch getting rocky and really sticky in the lower steep part of the descent. good snow coverage continued up to wildcat a with some icy sections under the snow. slide crossing not a problem. the ridge was the same with ice on some of the ledges that wasn't an issue today. upper polecat ski trail was groomed, but below on cat nap and into lower polecat it was not. decent snow coverage that was a bit sticky this afternoon. we encountered little ice. no problems with ski area staff though they were closing as we were heading down. one person did question us a bit more than i have ever had done on the slopes, but didn't outright tell us we shouldn't be there.
equipment: wore microspikes to start switching to snowshoes maybe a half mile below the ridge. wore snowshoes until steep descent into notch where we went with microspikes which had some major balling issues in the sticky snow. went back to snowshoes shortly after starting up wildcat a and wore them the rest of the day.
comments: ended up being a great day for this hike. a bit warm at times which was ok, but didn't have the best effect on the snow. my first time combining these peaks in winter. made for a nice day. thanks cynthia.
