Catskills Peak Bagging part 1. 2/4/06
All who had planned made it to the Halcott parking lot on Rt. 42 at 8:00 am Saturday morning. Zero-G (Ronnie), Cold Feet (Dave), Matabobo (Jean), and friend (Annie), and myself Doodles (George).
After all introductions we had decided to leave two cars at the Sherrill parking lot and then shuttle up to start on Devils Path off Spruceton Road. The forcast called for rain by noon but the morning was partly sunny about 40 deg.
We started up the trail about 9:00. No snow at the lower elevations. At the sharp turn in the path about 1 mile up we left the trail to head for the summit of North Dome. At around 3000' we had encountered snow cover with increasing depth to about 6-8in at the top. Along with the snow, we converged with Connie, Judy, and Al. At this point we made our introductions and all continued on to the summit.
All 8 of us had signed in, had a snack, talked for a few minutes and decided to move on to Sherrill. Our three new found friends had left for Sherrill before us and left us a very nice trail to follow (thanks folks).
All of us once again joined up for the last three or four hundred feet up to Sherrill. We peaked out at about 12:00. At this point we had a quick lunch, took group pictures and parted ways. Connie, Judy, and Al departed Sherrill on a different descent. (it was nice to meet you all, Al thanks for all your knowledge of the Catskills).
The five of us made our way back to our cars by 2:00.
At this point we had to say our goodbyes to Dave after relocating to Birch Creek Road for our climb up Halcott. (very nice meeting you Dave. Hope we can hook up again sometime).
Ronnie, Jean, Annie and myself started up to Halcott at 3:00 with a light rain. We were very lucky that the weather held out as long as it did. We wasted no time to summit by 4:00 and sign in. By this time the rain started to pick up so we wasted no time in order to get down in the daylight. We finished up by 5:00 in the rain, then proceeded to retrieve our cars.
All three peaks had about the same amout of snow 6-12in.
All barebooted the entire trip.
Tomorrow Ronnie, Jean, Annie and myself will hook up again for Vly and Bearpen. Great trip, Great people.
Part 2 of our weekend to folloow tomorrow.
