Had a short but fun trip in the Moose River Plains & Wakely Dam. area. Spencer, Maddi, and I, and canines, Sunny and Bookah took a hike toward Cellar Pond, a beautiful pond on a lightly used trail. Although we collectively wished to see a big moose in the shallows, none appeared, though their was moose sign and scat on the hike in. We guessed that if you sat their quietly in the early morning or at dusk, you'd definitely see moose.
We hiked back to the height of land and then took the ridge towards the summit. The bottom of this short route was beautiful....lots of fern whacking, but as we progressed, it got tighter and thicker. Still, no big deal. As we climbed we kept moving left, passed over a few bumps, and then enjoyed a summit snack before heading down the really STEEP direct route to the jeep road.
With a slightly later start in the morning due to the long drive to the TH, and the pond exploration, we weighed hitting other 'quad peaks'. It was heading toward midafternoon though and instead, we decided to go bushwhack around Wakely Pond, which we did. Although no moose, we saw a pair of loons on the pond and great views towards Wakely Mt and its tower.
This is a nice area back in here, and we all look forward to 'whacking the other non-list mountains back in here.
Sunny now has only 1 more non-46r and a dozen of the 46er peaks remaining for her ADK100 finish later this year on Noonmark.
Nice mountains, nice terrain, great company. Bookah gave the day 4 "woofs".
