Four of us (Karen, Steve, Beth (Damselfly) did Mt. Martha and Owl's Head. The parking lot was snow free but the entire trail had coverage. It was hardpacked the entire way with varying amounts of new(er) snow on top. A trace at the bottom to about 3" from the snowmobile jct. to the top. We barebooted the trail up to the jct with out any slipping or postholing. The postholes were done by a moose and judging from the blood around some of them it was not easy on him/her. Some of the postholes were the depth of my pole. At the jct Karen and Beth put on snowshoes but Steve and I barebooted. No problems. We reached the summit of Martha and enjoyed no wind and spectacular views!
After a bit we were ready to proceed to Owl's Head. Took a couple of minutes to find the trail head as no one had been on it since early this month. Once located it was tight at the start as the trees were snow/ice encrusted. After about 100 yds it opened up and was easy going. We zigged a couple of times when we should have zagged but overall we were on the trail. Not sure if we hit the end of the trail correctly, as we had to almost crawl/scramble on a steep sidehill to get up to the ledges but we made it through. More perfect weather and views awaited.
The trip back and down was more of a perfect day out. We kept the snowshoes on for the descent for traction. 3 others and a dog were headed over after us so the trail to Owl's head should be a bit more visible.
Great day out.
Thanks John for the Martha's mile info. It helped!
Not sure of the entire way down but the snowmobile trail from the top down was not snowmobiled and was covered with snow. Looked interesting for those of you with skiing skills.
