Some friends of mine were having trouble finding the trailhead to Black mtn on Lime Kiln Rd because of lots of damage. Does anyone know anything about this, because I wanted to take this trail soon...

If not, I guess I'll take the other one.

Maybe

I was out there this spring looking for the beginning of the western end of the Blueberry Mtn trail. I saw what I think was the beginning of the Black Mtn trail, but it didn't look too inviting as there was logging going on right where the trailhead should have been. I suggest driving all the way to the end of the dirt road till you get to the Blueberry trailhead, then turn around and proceed back out until you see what looks like a small road to the right. Park there and poke around a bit and you might find the trail. I don't believe that the Black Mtn trail is maintained anymore and that may be why it's so difficult to locate. The eastern end of Blueberry Mtn trail is off Long Pond Road in Glencliff. It is a really nice trail with lots of ledges and mellow views.

Adopt an AT Corridor Section.......tis the season

Huh?

He was asking about the Chippewa Trail which is not on the same road as Blueberry Mtn Trail but on the main road to Lime Kilns. If the area where the trailhead is described in the WMG cannot be found, ask at the Lime Kilns if you can park there - that's where the trailhead used to be.

The S end of Black Mtn Trail was abandoned years ago - it's a gated logging road off Long Pond Road. Last I knew, the N end was open and I snowshoed up it once.

Well, whatever, but also be aware that many areas around here really got swacked in the April '07 Nor'easter, and lesser-known trails, paths, and forest roads are still clogged with blowdowns. Route-finding skills are essential when attempting to navigate them. Lots of new herd paths are developing, an interesting phenomenon. You get a chance to think like a moose thinks when it comes upon an inpenetrable tangle.

This is what I think happened to the road...it was severely damaged by that noreaster in April. Also, I'm not really an intrepid adventurer...I'd rather follow a marked trail than a bunch of herd paths, so if I can't find the trail...then I probably wont go for it. Though in the guide it says there is another trail that ascends the mtn in Benton...called the Black Mtn trail. Maybe I will try that sometime...

I hiked the trail on 08/09/07. The T/H was not marked but it is exactly 3.1 miles from Rte 25, on Lime Kiln Road. There is room for 3 cars in the parking area but plenty of room on the road. Don't miss visiting the kiln, it is very well preserved and there are markers explaining its use. The trail itself is in excellent condition. All debris has been removed so it is easy to follow and hike.

I did most of the Chippewa Trail on 9/19/05. I went in to the old Lime Kilns and found the trail difficult to follow, so I just headed cross country. After running into the trail a bit higher I stayed on it to the top of Black Mtn. I even found gold!

Yarr!!

Oh, and by the way Roy, Blueberry Mtn trail runs all the way through from Long Pond Rd to Page Rd off Lime Kiln same vicinity as Black Mtn Trail. I did a walk through this summer.
Yup, my mother used to be the adopter and even built the summit spur. I hope you removed any blowdowns you found as she retired.

Nice trail

Trail was in excellent condition. Blueberries were all gone darn it. Ever access Hogsback from there? Looks pretty close.

In a past century, I once parked at the S end of the Black Mtn Trail (then in service), bushwhack to Jeffers-Hogsback-Sugarloaf, down Sugarloaf Trail (then in service), old road to Chippewa Trail which I climbed up Black Mtn then Black Mtn Trail back to car. I started Blueberry-Jeffers-Hogsback-Sugarloaf last year but quit when it started to rain.

"Thread Bump"

Anyone hiking this Saturday morning? I want to take a hike up there, since my gf will be going to a Birthday party a couple miles from there. But I haven't hiked since October and I'm pretty out of shape, so if someone is going to break trail ahead of me, I'd like to know. I need to warm up and get back into hiking again.

Now maybe this should be moved to Trips and Events ...

We hiked the Chippewa Trail last summer and it's a worthwhile hike with satisfying views for the effort.

Parking should be no problem but if the parking lot is not plowed the shoulder may be tight.

If the trail is unbroken there may be a difficult water crossing, difficult to find the right route or difficult to cross safely, not far from the trailhead. Be cautious with the ice here. An alternative, which is described in the WMG takes you around this beaver pond and eventually to the trail itself. Another route would be to walk north on Lime Kiln Road, a couple hundred yards if I recall, until you come to a farm road south of a nice farmhouse and fields. This road will eventually take you to the trail.

I hiked this trail around this time last year. Parking was plowed out and there was space for several cars.
